My internship at UPM-MCC was a truly rewarding experience. Stepping into a professional lab environment felt overwhelming at first, but each day brought something new to learn. The team at UPM-MCC was not simply great at what they do, they were also incredibly generous with their knowledge. From media preparation to streaking bacteria and preserving microbes, they guided me patiently through every task.
One of the highlights for me was reviving and preserving bacteria and yeast. I have always been interested in microbiology, and getting hands-on experience really deepened my appreciation for it. I also had the chance to help with various tasks like counting CFUs, doing gram staining, and managing lab waste. Every task, big or small, taught me something new.
The internship also gave me the opportunity to take part in workshops. It was an exciting way to see how lab work applies to real-world problems. Additionally, we engaged in creative projects for the IBS open day, from designing merchandise to decorating display areas. The creative side of the internship was equally engaging. The chance to combine both scientific work and creative tasks made my experience diverse and well-rounded.
Beyond the lab, I took part in the “Go Green” program at the UPM Conservatory Park. We beautified the park by planting new trees, trimming plants, and helping with overall conservation efforts. It was a refreshing break from lab work and a wonderful way to contribute to the environment.
Overall, I am incredibly grateful to the entire UPM-MCC team, particularly Puan Musliyana, Kak Mai, Kak Ainaa, Prof. Zunita, and Dr. Ina, for their guidance and mentorship. Their patience and willingness to teach made my internship an unforgettable experience. Through this internship, I have gained practical skills, confidence in lab work, and a deeper appreciation for microbial culture collection, all while forging meaningful connections with an amazing team.
