Workshop on Radio Receptor Assay Tool for Food Safety Testing: Detection of Drug Residues in Food Products

24 October 2023 – The Workshop on Radio Receptor Assay Tool for Food Safety Testing: Detection of Drug Residues in Food Products, organised by the Natural Medicines and Products Research Laboratory (NaturMeds), Institute of Bioscience (IBS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), took place in Meeting Room 2 of NaturMeds B, IBS over a span of two days from October 24th to October 25th, 2023. This comprehensive workshop attracted 20 participants, both from within and outside UPM, with the primary objective of equipping them with the skills needed to detect antibiotics in animal-derived food products and animal feeds using the rapid radio immunoreceptor assay, a valuable tool for research.

The workshop commenced with a lecture by Dr. Muhamad Lukman Abdul Ghani, representing the Department of Veterinary Services, Malaysia. His presentation covered the topic of "Antibiotics in the Livestock Industry and Introduction to the Feed Act 2009". Following this informative session, Dr. Jin-Wook Kwon (Team Leader & Senior Researcher, National Institute of Fisheries Science, Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries, and Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Republic of Korea) delivered the second lecture. His presentation focused on "Bioanalytical Screening Methods" and provided an introduction to the Charm II System.

The workshop then transitioned to a hands-on session, where participants had the opportunity to gain practical experience in detecting veterinary drug residues in food products through the rapid radio immunoreceptor assay. During this hands-on segment, participants were actively involved in sample handling and the actual detection procedures.

The workshop concluded with a session for discussion, questions, and answers, followed by a closing ceremony. Overall, participants expressed their satisfaction and appreciation for the organisers, thanking them for arranging this valuable workshop. They also expressed the hope that similar workshops would be organised in the future.
