The Seminar on “Awareness of the Risk of Radioactive Pollution on Marine Aquaculture and Fisheries”

20 November 2023 – The seminar on "Awareness of the Risk of Radioactive Pollution on Marine Aquaculture and Fisheries" marked a collaborative effort between the Malaysia Aquaculture Development Association (MADA) and the Aquatic Animal Health and Therapeutics Laboratory (AquaHealth) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The event took place at the Auditorium, Institute of Bioscience, UPM, and featured presentations by Mr. Benedict Lim Chin Khian (President of MADA), Mrs. Hajah Noraishah binti Pungut (Director-General of the Malaysian Atomic Energy Licensing Board), and Mrs. Norhidayah binti Othman (Deputy Director-General, Import Branch, Food Safety and Quality Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia). The seminar aimed to address the concerns of marine aquaculture farmers and sea fishermen regarding the monitoring of radiation levels in water and the surrounding environment, specifically in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant incident in Japan. Additionally, the discussions focused on monitoring and controlling safety issues related to food produced from marine aquaculture and fisheries. Participants from various sectors actively engaged in the seminar, seeking to enhance awareness about the risks of radioactive pollution on marine aquaculture and fisheries.
