The pandan plant, scientifically known as Pandanus amaryllifolius, is a tropical plant commonly found in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Pandan leaves are well-known for their fragrant and pleasant aroma, making them a key ingredient in many traditional dishes. However, beyond its use in cooking, the pandan plant also offers numerous benefits in terms of traditional medicine and daily applications.
Daily Uses
a) Culinary Flavoring and Fragrance
Pandan leaves are often used as a natural flavoring agent in cooking. They are added to rice, desserts, or beverages to impart a fragrant aroma and enhance the taste. In Malaysia, “nasi lemak” and “kuih seri muka” are among the popular dishes that use pandan leaves.
b) Natural Air Freshener
Dried pandan leaves can be used as a natural air freshener for wardrobes, bedrooms, or cars. Their natural aroma not only refreshes the air but also helps repel insects such as cockroaches.
c) Insect Repellent
In addition to cockroaches, the strong scent of pandan leaves is also believed to repel mosquitoes and other insects. Placing a few pandan leaves around the house is thought to help reduce insect disturbances.
Traditional Medicinal Benefits
a) Reducing High Blood Pressure
In traditional medicine, pandan leaf decoction is used as a natural remedy to help lower high blood pressure. Patients are advised to drink the boiled pandan water regularly, but they should still consult with medical professionals beforehand.
b) Relieving Joint Pain and Rheumatism
Crushed pandan leaves or pandan-infused massage oil are believed to relieve joint and muscle pain. It is commonly used by the elderly who suffer from joint problems or body aches.
c) Aiding Digestion
Moderate consumption of pandan leaf water is also said to help improve the digestive system and relieve bloating and constipation.
Conclusion
The pandan plant is not just an ordinary plant that decorates the garden, but also a natural source of many health benefits. From cooking to health care, the use of pandan is well-suited for incorporation into daily life. However, despite its traditional use, any medicinal application should be carried out with caution and under the advice of healthcare professionals.
