9 September 2024 –– Prof. Dr. Zunita Zakaria, Director of the Institute of Bioscience, and Mdm. Musliyana Mansor, Science Officer of the Universiti Putra Malaysia Microbe Culture Collection (UPM-MCC), attended the National Seminar on the Budapest Treaty, organised by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) at MyIPO Tower, Petaling Jaya. Following Malaysia’s accession to the Budapest Treaty on June 30, 2022, this seminar offered participants valuable insights into the Budapest Treaty system, enhancing their understanding of the process for microorganism deposition in patent applications within Malaysia.
Prof. Dr. Zunita Zakaria also led a sharing session on the second day, titled “Challenges and the Way Forward for the National Depository Authority (NDA)”. She discussed the journey of the UPM-MCC, from its inception to its organisational structure, the various activities conducted, services provided, and the preparations made prior to its official designation as the National Depository Authority (NDA).
On March 27, 2024, UPM-MCC was officially gazetted by MyIPO as Malaysia’s first NDA. Subsequently, on April 26, 2024, UPM-MCC, represented by YBhg. Dato’ Professor Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, Vice Chancellor of UPM, was awarded the NDA certificate by YB Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, during the 2024 National Intellectual Property Awards (AHIN 2024).
