5 December 2025 – Serdang. The 2025 Plant Tissue Culture Course, organized by the Biodiversity Unit, Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), recorded an encouraging response with eight (8) sessions conducted from June to October 2025. The course attracted participants from various sectors, including private agencies, agricultural entrepreneurs and government agencies such as RISDA and the Kolej Vokasional (Pertanian) Teluk Intan, Perak.
Conducted on a one-to-one basis, the course aims to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and fundamental skills in plant tissue culture, covering both theoretical and practical components. The training spans the entire process of plantlet production, from field to acclimatization process. Key topics include basic tissue culture techniques, media preparation, sterilization processes and the transfer of plantlets from tissue culture to polybag. A unique feature of the course allows participants to bring home successfully developed tissue culture samples.
Participants were also taken on a visit to the Conservatory Park to explore various medicinal plant species and gain inspiration for potential commercialization opportunities.
The implementation of this course was led by experienced speakers and facilitators, Puan Julia binti Abdul Aziz, Science Officer and En. Muhammad Amri Putra bin Safhee, Executive Officer. The course was further strengthened by the involvement of additional instructors, namely Associate Professor Dr. Noor Baity binti Saidi and Dr. Nadiya Akmal binti Baharum from the Faculty of Biotechnology, as well as Dr. Nurashikin binti Kemat from the Faculty of Agriculture.
The course was also extended to students of Kolej Vokasional (Pertanian) Teluk Intan to enhance their understanding and provide early exposure to modern propagation techniques. A tissue culture competition was also organized for the students, further strengthening the element of competency-based learning.
