Edu@VacBio Series 10– Simplifying Nucleic Acid Extraction through Automation

23 June 2026 – The Laboratory of Vaccine and Biomolecules (VacBio), Institute of Bioscience (IBS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), successfully organized Edu@VacBio Series 10, titled “Simplifying Nucleic Acid Extraction through Automation.” The seminar was held at the Tongkat Ali Emas Room, Institute of Bioscience, UPM, in collaboration with Sciencewerke and Tiangen Biotech (Beijing) Co., Ltd. The event was attended by 28 participants, comprising researchers, postgraduate students, staff, and industry representatives interested in exploring automated technologies for nucleic acid extraction.

The session featured Dr. Siok Hwee, Head of Genomics at Sciencewerke, as the invited speaker. She shared insights into the use of automated systems for DNA and RNA extraction, highlighting how automation improves laboratory efficiency, enhances accuracy and reproducibility, and minimizes errors associated with manual processing.

Throughout the seminar, participants were introduced to the latest advancements in automated nucleic acid extraction technologies and their importance in streamlining laboratory workflows. These technologies play a significant role in animal disease research, particularly in poultry and livestock diseases, by enabling faster, more consistent, and highly accurate sample processing. Automated extraction supports a wide range of applications, including molecular diagnostics, pathogen detection, disease surveillance, and vaccine development, ultimately improving the reliability of analytical results and strengthening disease prevention and control strategies in the livestock industry.

The program concluded with a group photo session, followed by a live demonstration of an automated nucleic acid extraction system, providing participants with the opportunity to observe the operation of the equipment and its practical applications in research and molecular diagnostics.
