5 July 2023 - Comparative Medicine and Technology Unit (COMeT) at the Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), hosted a visit by delegates from Zoo Melaka. The delegate team comprised three staff members from the zoo, responsible for ensuring a sustainable food source for animal consumption. The main purpose of their visit was to observe the breeding operations conducted by COMeT. The zoo veterinary officer had proposed this visit to explore the possibility of starting a rodent-breeding program. The aim behind such a program was to ensure a sustainable food supply for the reptiles, reducing their dependence on public donations for their food source.
The visit commenced with presentations from COMeT officers, followed by a tour of the breeding facility. As part of their visit, the officials participated in a quiz prepared by the COMeT officers, which they answered successfully. Additionally, discussions were held regarding potential collaborations and knowledge sharing between UPM and the zoo. As a token of appreciation, at the end of the visit, the participants were presented with certificates by the COMeT Coordinator. This was followed by a group photo session and a lunch gathering to conclude the visit.
