Seminar on Biosafety and Biosecurity : How to Implement Practically in Laboratory?

7 February 2024 - The Laboratory of Vaccine and Biomolecules (VacBio), Institute of Bioscience, in collaboration with UPM Institutional Biosafety and Biosecurity Committee (IBBC UPM), had organized an awareness seminar on the importance of implementing standard operating procedures (S.O.P.) for biosafety and biosecurity in the laboratory. Targeted participants for this seminar were students, researchers, laboratory staff, and biosafety and biosecurity practitioners in Malaysia. A total of thirty (30) participants attended this seminar and the seminar sessions were delivered by four (4) invited speakers who are experts in their respective fields related to biosafety and biosecurity. In the first session, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chia Suet Lin, Deputy Chairman of IBBC UPM, participants received an overview of biosafety and biosecurity practices at UPM, including documentation procedures and relevant acts. The second session provided insights into best practices for biosafety and biosecurity in animal research, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nor Yasmin Abdul Rahaman, a UPM IBBC Committee Member. Following this, the third session, facilitated by Mr. Clarence Ko Ching Huat, a Science Officer from the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, delved into the importance of utilizing Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) in biosafety laboratories. The final session, presented by Ir. Dr. R. Tiruselvam, Technical Director at Biogard Asia (M) Sdn. Bhd., highlighted the essential requirements and facilities in a biosafety laboratory.
