Targeted delivery of 5-fluorouracil-1-acetic acid (5-FA) to cancer cells overexpressing epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) using virus-like nanoparticles

This paper demonstrates the application of hepatitis B virus-like nanoparticle (VLNP) as a specific drug delivery vehicle in the chemotherapy. The VLNP displayed a cell-penetrating peptide that specifically interacts with the epithelial growth factor receptors (EGFR) of cancer cells, and thus enhanced the delivery and efficacy of 5-fluorouracil-1-acetic acid, a newly synthesized anticancer agent, in an EGFR-dependent manner.
