Ad Hoc Workshop on The Care and Use of Rodents in Research

21 June 2023 – Comparative Medicine and Technology Unit (COMeT) at the Institute of Bioscience organised an “Ad Hoc Workshop on The Care and Use of Rodents in Research”. The workshop saw the participation of three registered attendees from Universiti Putra Malaysia. Among them were a lecturer and a postgraduate student from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science, along with another postgraduate student from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The primary objective of this workshop was to provide education to postgraduate students and researchers on the fundamental handling techniques of laboratory animals, as well as to introduce them to the Animal Welfare Act of 2015 before they embark on their research projects. This workshop caters to requests from postgraduate students, researchers, and private sectors interested in laboratory animal research.

The workshop was divided into two main sessions. It commenced with a theoretical session followed by a visit to the animal research facility. Finally, the participants had the opportunity to engage in a practical session, where they were able to handle the laboratory animals under supervision of the Veterinary Officer. The event culminated with the distribution of certificates to the participants by the COMeT coordinator, a group photograph, and a lunch gathering.
