Dr. Zarirah’s research covers study of hormonal axis, pathways and functions of hormones to maintain homeostasis in aquatic organisms. We emphasize studies on physiological and reproductive system in fish and development of artificial hormones to improve breeding in farmed fish. We applied biotechnology techniques including DNA cloning and profiling, genetic engineering and recombinant DNA/protein technology to determine the expression level of hormones and to develop implants or synthetic hormones to regulate gonad maturation and induce spawning in fish. Our long-term goal is to produce artificial hormones with higher potency and stability for breeding and spawning program in farmed fish.
