Microbial culture Collection Unit (UNiCC)

INTRODUCTION

The Microbial Culture Collection Unit (UNiCC), Institute of Bioscience, was initiated in to maintain and manage a duplicate of available microbial strains in UPM. UNiCC also aspires to provide strains for researcher and teaching laboratories. The laboratory is equipped with freeze-dryer, freezer, refrigerated centrifuge, laminar air flow, phase-contrast microscope, autoclaves and incubators. For long term preservation, two techniques are applied i.e freeze-drying and freezing. OBJECTIVE To establish and maintain a microbial culture collection center using a standard system; To provide safe deposition of microbial cultures for Malaysian researchers and industries; To stimulate and support the study and research work related to microbial diversity and taxonomy in UPM.

SERVICES & FACILITIES

1. SAFE DEPOSITORY
The main focus of UNiCC is to provide Safe Depository services. It is a service for researchers who want to maintain important strains under a proper culture collection management system. Most groups of bacteria, fungi and yeasts that are classified in Hazard Group 1 or 2 are accepted. The service is completely confidential and recall (or distribution) of cultures is carried out strictly according to the instructions of the client. Viability testing of safe deposit cultures after prolonged storage (more than 1 month) will only be performed upon depositor's requests.

2. LYOPHILIZATION OF MICROORGANISM
Microorganism will be preserved by lyophilization. Ampoules containing the lyophilized cells will be returned and maintained by the clients themselves.

3. MICROORGANISM SUPPLY
The unit functions to link researchers to the owners of the deposited microbes.

4. ANTIMICROBIAL / ANTIFUNGAL ASSAY SCREENING

5. MIC TEST

6. CONSULTATIONS

7. TRAINING
