30 July 2024 – The Natural Medicines and Products Research Laboratory (NaturMeds), Institute of Bioscience (IBS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organized a workshop titled "CHARM II and Mass Spectrometry: Analytical Solutions for Toxicological Risk" on July 30th and 31st, 2024, at the Tongkat Ali Emas Seminar Room, IBS. This two-day event was attended by 19 participants from both within and outside UPM, aiming to obtain hands-on exposure to detecting contaminants and residues using the CHARM II system and Liquid Chromatography-mass Spectrometry (LC-MS). Presentations were delivered by associate researchers from NaturMeds.
The first day began with a presentation by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Faizal Abdull Razis titled "Industrial and Environmental Occurring Toxicants in Herbs and Spices: Are We Aware?", followed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sazlinda Kamaruzaman’s talk on "Enhancing Contaminant Analysis through Effective Sample Preparation Techniques." Prof. Dr. Intan Safinar Ismail then lectured on the "Fundamentals and Application of LC-MS in Toxicology Research," and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Faizal Abdull Razis returned to discuss "Chemical Hazards in Food Matrices (CHARM II)." The day concluded with a lecture by Dr. Rozaini Abdullah on "Toxicological Risk Assessment."
The second day offered participants practical sessions, including sample handling and techniques for detecting pesticide residues and contaminants using the CHARM II system and LC-MS. The workshop concluded at 4:00 PM with a Q&A session, discussions, and closing remarks. Participants provided positive feedback, expressing appreciation to the organizers and hope for similar workshops in the future.
