International Webinar on Aquatic Animal Health and Therapeutics: Current Disease Management in Aquaculture - Sharing from Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia

26 August 2023 - The Aquatic Animal Health and Therapeutics Laboratory, in collaboration with the Asian Fisheries Society, organized an International Webinar on Aquatic Animal Health and Therapeutics: Current Disease Management in Aquaculture, featuring insights from Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This webinar was held virtually via Google Meet. Prof. Dr. Natrah Fatin Mohd. Ikhsan served as the moderator, and the speakers included Dr. Ha Thanh Dong, Dr. Indah Istiqomah, and Dr. Norhariani Mohd Nor. The speakers presented their research findings and discussed technologies for fish health management applied in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, respectively. The webinar also addressed critical issues related to technologies, policies, and aquaculture practices. A total of 234 participants attended the webinar, as recorded by Google Meet data. The participants included national and international attendees from government agencies, industries, research institutions, UPM staff, and students.

Dr. Ha Thanh Dong, the first speaker from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, presented his work on "Nanobubbles Technology to Control Diseases in Aquaculture." Nanobubbles are nanoscale gas-filled cavities in liquids, with a diameter of less than 200 nm, produced by pressure. The application of this technology in aquaculture has shown potential in reducing pathogen loads and improving vaccine efficacy. The second speaker, Dr. Indah Istiqomah from Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia, presented her research on "Freshwater Fish Diseases and Their Management in Indonesia." She shared findings from studies on disease prevalence in Indonesia, including streptococcosis, motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS), infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV), and tilapia lake virus disease (TiLV). Dr. Istiqomah also explained various disease management strategies and policies implemented to control disease transmission in fish. The third speaker, Dr. Norhariani Mohd Nor from Malaysia, discussed her findings on "The Economic Impacts of Vaccination in Marine Fish Culture – Inputs from Current Studies in Malaysia." She conducted a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) to compare the costs of disease with the costs of vaccination. Her research provides a foundation for decision-making and assessing the outcomes of interventions.
