SERDANG, Feb 20 – The Laboratory of Vaccines and Immunotherapeutics (LIVES) in collaboration with the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Committee, Institute of Bioscience (IBS) organized an Awareness Seminar on Biosafety and Biosecurity to all lab staffs in IBS. With the objective to spread awareness about biosafety and biosecurity practices in conducting lab works, research, and services related to biomaterials, the seminar has been attended by 50 staff from all work units and laboratories in IBS. The Deputy Director of IBS cum the Chairperson of IBS OSH Committee, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Syahrilnizam Abdullah has delivered a welcoming speech and followed by a talk by invited speaker Mr. Mohd Azman Ahmad, UPM Biosafety Officer (BSO).
The UPM Biosafety and Biosecurity Committee was established in 2019 to cater biosafety and biosecurity in UPM, in accordance with the requirement of the Biosafety Act 1979 as a mandatory guideline and reference while working with biohazards and toxins. Policies and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) have been developed in order to prevent accidental release of specific biological agents and toxins or intentional release of biological materials/ acquisition of knowledge, tools or techniques. This seminar also facilitates staff to understand the Laboratory Acquired Infection (LAI) and how to prevent the infection by using hygienic procedures. The seminar also considered as part of training and recorded in the e-training system with 3 CPD. - UPM
